Day one — Arrive, settle in and keep the plan light. Take a short neighbourhood walk, eat well and sleep. Your first evening does not need to prove anything.
Day two — Explore national memory and contemporary Accra. Combine major historical landmarks with a gallery, market or guided neighbourhood experience. Finish with Ghanaian food and live music if your energy allows.
Day three — Give Accra another day. Choose a creative route, a food experience, a beach afternoon or time with friends and family. Group stops by area to reduce traffic stress.
Day four — Travel to Cape Coast or Elmina and stay overnight. Settle in, learn about the town and prepare for the emotional weight of the heritage experience.
Day five — Visit a castle with a guide, then leave time to reflect. Add a coastal meal, community experience or quiet evening rather than immediately rushing away.
Day six — Choose nature or return slowly: Kakum if arrangements and timing work, a beach stop, or an unhurried journey back to Accra. Confirm travel conditions locally.
Day seven — Keep a buffer for shopping from local makers, one final meal and packing. Reach the airport with generous time. If your flight schedule permits, write down what you want to remember before Ghana becomes a blur of camera-roll images.
Make it yours — This is a rhythm, not a command. Diaspora travellers may want more heritage time; food lovers may build around kitchens and markets; hikers may exchange the coast for Volta. The best itinerary reflects your purpose and protects your energy.
Why this route works
Accra, Cape Coast, Elmina and Kakum form a practical first-week corridor recognised in Ghana’s tourism planning. Two Accra days provide arrival recovery and city context; two nights on the Central Region coast reduce backtracking and create space for a respectful heritage visit.
A workable overnight pattern
Use nights one to three in Accra, nights four and five around Cape Coast or Elmina, and night six back in Accra if your international flight leaves on day seven. Visit Kakum early on the return day only after confirming access, transport and the time needed to reach Accra.
Know what to leave for next time
Kumasi and the Volta Region are strong alternatives, but adding either to this exact week creates long transfers and thinner experiences. Exchange the coast for one of them rather than forcing all three into seven days. Keep the final day flexible for traffic, packing and airport time.
