Is Lake Volta a natural lake?

Lake Volta is an artificial lake: its formation is linked to the construction of the Akosombo Dam. It is therefore different from a lake formed entirely through natural processes.

Water and electricity

The Ghana Tourism Authority describes the lake in connection with the dam and hydroelectric power. It also highlights lake excursions, including trips to Dodi Island.

A useful distinction

The lake, the dam and the power station are related, but they are not interchangeable names. The lake is the body of water; the dam is the structure associated with holding that water back.
