In the first days of the world, the tortoise was a small, soft creature with gentle eyes and a bare back like any other animal. He could not run fast, could not climb trees, could not defend himself against predators. But what Akye the Tortoise lacked in strength, he made up for in goodness of heart.
When the dry season came and the waterholes shrank, it was Akye who dug with his strong claws to find the hidden water and told the other animals where to drink. When a great storm felled trees across the forest path, it was Akye who spent three days clearing them, moving one branch at a time with his slow, patient strength. When the birds quarrelled over nesting territory, Akye would walk between them and speak so reasonably that both sides would remember they were neighbours.
He never asked for anything in return. He never boasted of his work. When others thanked him, he would simply nod and say: "We are all here together. We must help each other."
One day, Nyame the Creator looked down from the sky and saw Akye crossing an open field, completely exposed, moving slowly, with a hawk circling overhead. The hawk swooped. Akye pressed himself flat against the earth and waited for the end.
But the end did not come.
Nyame, watching, reached down and placed his own protection over Akye, a dome of hardened earth, carved with patterns from the forest floor, fitted perfectly to Akye's back. When the hawk's talons struck, they glanced off harmlessly. The hawk flew away in confusion.
Akye raised himself up and felt what was on his back. It was solid, warm, and smelling of deep earth. He could not take it off. It was not meant to come off.
When he returned to the forest that evening, all the animals gathered around in wonder. "What is that on your back?" they asked.
"A gift," said Akye simply.
"Why did you receive it and not us?" asked the eagle, who had always been proud of his own strength.
Akye thought for a moment. "Perhaps because I never needed strength," he said. "I needed protection. And I never thought to ask for it."
From that day, the tortoise carried its home upon its back, and no matter where it wandered, it was never without shelter. And the patterns on its shell, if you look carefully, are the patterns of the forest paths that Akye spent so many patient years clearing for others.
